MTN AFRINOLLY: WATCH AFRICAN MOVIES ON YOUR PHONE.

For Chike Maduegbuna and his team at Afrinolly, (a mobile phone app focused on Nigeria’s entertainment industry, Nollywood) the past ten months has been a flurry of successive wins. Afrinolly was first introduced to Nigeria’s tech community via a media parley held in August 2011 in Lagos, where it granted exclusive access to the app to a select group of technology and entertainment bloggers.
Fresh off of its nomination as a finalist in the 2011 Google Android Developer Challenge, the media parley was a great way to bring the app to market. Later that year, it emerged as one of three winners of the Google Android Developer Challenge in Sub Saharan Africa winning the contest cash prize of about $25,000.

It is one thing to win a challenge/contest but quite another to effectively leverage the exposure and publicity it brings as a foundation for building a successful business.
After winning the challenge, the Afrinolly team did not rest on their laurels but proceeded to sign deals and forge partnerships with content aggregators, network providers and device manufacturers. For instance, they worked with Nokia to develop a version of their app for its S40 series and forged partnership deals that got the Afrinolly app preinstalled in the Nokia Asha 201 and Asha 303. They also partnered with Samsung to get the app preinstalled on the Samsung Galaxy SII, Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Pocket amongst others.
Its biggest win however came when it successfully partnered with leading African telecommunications provider, MTN.
According to the Afrinolly team, they collaborated with MTN to help drive app consciousness among Nigerians and promote the Nollywood industry on mobile devices. Through a co-branding deal, the MTN Afrinolly partnership was launched delivering the Afrinolly experience to MTN’s base of subscribers spread across Nigeria.
MTN included Afrinolly as one of its “Value Added Services,” providing an opportunity for hundreds of thousands of its subscribers to download the service. Today, Afrinolly has over 450,000 downloads and counting. It also recently scored a big win when Research in Motion/Blackberry pushed the Afrinolly app via Virtual Private Loading (VPL) to MTN subscribers in Nigeria. According to the team, till date most of the app’s downloads are from Nigeria,  Ghana, South Africa, India and Brazil.
With all these partnerships in its arsenal, the future looks very bright for Chike Maduegbuna and his team at Afrinolly.

EDO DECIDES: OSHIOMHOLE WINS BY LANDSLIDE

SaharaReporters has ascertained from a top official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that Governor Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole is the winner of the Edo State governorship election.
With votes counted from 18 local governments in Edo State, Mr. Oshiomhole, the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), had garnered 477, 478 votes. His main rival, Major General Charles Airhiavbere (ret.) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), scored 144,255 votes.
“It’s clear that the incumbent governor is going to win by a landslide,” said the INEC source, adding, “INEC is in the process of preparing a formal statement to declare him the winner.”
Some analysts regarded the July 14 election as a final proof of the political irrelevance of Tony Anenih, former chair of the PDP’s board of trustees who paraded himself as a kingmaker in the state. Mr. Oshiomhole trounced his PDP rival, handpicked by Mr. Anenih, in both the candidate’s ward as well as that of Mr. Anenih.
President Goodluck Jonathan had campaigned in Benin City for the losing PDP candidate. The president had also ordered the deployment of thousands of soldiers to major towns in Edo State in a bid to intimidate voters and shore up the PDP candidate. However, the people of the state trooped out in large number to ensure that Mr. Oshiomhole’s victory could not be stolen.
Reached moments ago, an aide to Governor Oshiomhole said the governor was grateful for the vigilance of the people to ensure that the voters triumphed over the PDP’s gimmicks. He added that the governor saw his victory as an indication that the people of Edo “have decisively rejected those who lie and kill for the sake of power.”
Olaitan Oyerinde, the governor’s private secretary and one of his closest aides, was murdered by assassins suspected to have been hired by PDP henchmen in the state.
Governor Oshiomhole was declared winner by INEC's returning officer Prof. Osayuki Oshodi at exactly 7:40 Am Nigerian time

Mass burial for victims of fuel tanker fire

More than 100 people who rushed to scoop up fuel after a Nigerian petrol tanker tipped over Thursday were burned to death when the vehicle and pools of spilled oil caught fire.
Children were among those killed, while dozens more were badly burned, despite a warning from troops who arrived at the crash site that a blaze could ignite at any moment.
More than 85 of the victims have been buried at the scene as their bodies, burned beyond recognition, could not be moved.
The tanker driving in the southern Rivers state swerved trying to avoid a collision with three oncoming vehicles including a bus, said Kayode Olagunju, head of the Federal Road Safety Commission in the state.
Shortly after the collision hundreds of locals in the Ahoada area flocked to the scene to collect the spilling fuel.
Some troops who reached the site before the fire broke out told people to clear off, but many ignored the warning, an official from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.
Military personnel “got to the scene before us. They warned people to leave the scene to avoid disaster. But many of them were busy scooping fuel. They disobeyed,” Emenike Umesi of NEMA explained.
The state’s information commissioner Ibim Semenitari told AFP that “more than 100 people were killed in the inferno… while around 50 with severe burns have been hospitalised.”
Large excavators were brought to the site on a major inter-state highway to dig a mass grave for dozens of victims whose bodies were too badly damaged to be transported or recognised.
“They couldn’t be moved,” Semenitari said, putting the number of those already buried at more than 85.
Some of those being treated at the hospital were also burned beyond recognition, said Geoffrey Ikogha, a local chief in Ahoada, near the oil hub of Port Harcourt.
He confirmed that women and children were among those killed.
Given the severity of the burns suffered by some at the hospital, the toll could yet increase, Semenitari told AFP.
“There is a chance that we could lose 10 to 15 more… medically, they are in a bad state,” she said.
The number of family and friends at the General Hospital in Ahoada was huge, with many sobbing uncontrollably.
“Security people are having tough time controlling the surging crowd,” said Ikogha. “The situation is tragic and pathetic.”
Many of the dead were motorcycle taxi operators, known locally as “Okada”, who raced to fill up their tanks after learning of the crash, according to an AFP photographer at the scene.
Motorcycle taxi driver Kingsley Jafure said the collision occurred at roughly 6:00 am, and that the spilled petrol caught fire about 90 minutes later, but officials said the time between the crash and the blaze was shorter.
“At about 7:30 while I was inside trying to decide whether to go (scoop fuel) or not. That is when I saw that the tanker exploded,” Jafure said.
Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan lamented “the fact that once again, so many Nigerian lives have been lost in an avoidable fuel fire disaster.”
Fuel leaks and oil tanker accidents in Nigeria often draw huge crowds and many deaths have been caused by accidental fires.
Major road accidents, often involving poorly maintained large-haul trucks, are also common in the country, where many of the roads are in terrible condition.
Olagunju of the road safety agency declined to comment on the state of the roads in the area, or the potential causes of the crash, saying he did want to undermine the investigation.
Rivers Governor Chibuike Amaechi demanded a full probe in a statement released by his office, which called the event an “avoidable tragedy.”
In October 1998, more than 1,000 people died at Jesse, in the southeastern Delta state, when a pipeline exploded as people tried to steal fuel.
In April last year, a fuel tanker overturned at an army checkpoint in the central part of the country, sparking an inferno in which some 50 people were killed.
More than 17,000 people died in about 31,000 road accidents across Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, between 2007 and 2009, according to the road federal road safety agency’s 2010 report, the most recent published.

THE CHRONICLES!

Our journey began at Genesis through Exodus. On the way, we saw Leviticus recording the Numbers of people at Deuteronomy, while Joshua was waiting at the beautiful gate for
Judges to see Ruth calling loudly"Samuel, Samuel". At that stage, the first and second Kings of Chronicles were coming to visit Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther for the misfortune
of Job, their brother. Then they noticed that Mr Psalms... was teaching his children Proverbs
concerning Ecclesiastes and Songs of Solomon. This coincided with the period that
Isaiah and Jeremiah were engaged in Lamentation for Ezekiel and Daniel their friend. By that time, Amos and Obadiah were not around. Three days later, Hosea, Joel and Jonah traveled in the same ship with Micah and Nahum to Jerusalem. More also, Habakkuk
visited Zephaniah who introduced him to Haggai a friend of Zechariah whose cousin is
Malachi. Immediately after the old tradition Matthew, Mark, Luke and John got involved in
Acts with the Romans who were behaving like the Corinthians, who were also always at logger head with the Galatians. At that time too,the Ephesians realizing that the Philippians were close to the Colossians, suggested to the Thessalonians that they should first of all see Timothy who had gone to the house of Titus to teach Philemon his younger brother
how to read and write Hebrew. On hearing,James asked Peter to explain to him how the three Johns have disclosed to Jude the Revelation of our LORD JESUS CHRIST.
